Wireless and the Economy

With all the dark gloomy news coming from nearly every corner of the economy, you might wonder how the wireless industry will fare with an economic downturn? There’s no crystal ball here, but all indications are that the wireless industry will weather economic conditions better than most other industries. During times like these, people begin to think about what they can do without and how they can cut back.

The first place many households are likely to look is their ‘land line’ phone lines aka regular phone lines. Unless a household uses DSL for their internet access, they may have trouble justifying a wired phone in the house. Even if they do have DSL, they might look at a bundled cable package for their internet service to get rid of those non versatile ‘land lines’.

Cell phones work so much better and are so much more convenient that I can’t see people shutting off their wireless to save money. They’re simply ingrained and ‘must have’ items. A worst case scenario is that people might start to cut back on their wireless service plans and we may see a dip in sales of the higher end plans. But all in all, I would expect the wireless industry to continue in its growth patterns.

Here is a link to a Fierce Wireless Story where wireless industry experts ’sound off’ about the subject of the economy and the wireless industry. While each of them delivers a slightly different take, most are in agreement that the wireless industry will remain a healthy one.
