Two Things to Watch Out For

When checking out home based businesses, here are two things to look out for. Beware of any home based business that makes it look like you can make huge amounts of money without doing much work. These are usually scams. Most legitimate network marketing companies like MyWirelessRep will take work to build up. Another thing you should avoid are companies that are just starting up. That’s not say that there aren’t legitimate startup companies, but your risk of having them fail is greater. Stick with a solid company with low or no debt and one that has been around for a while. MyWirelessRep is part of Lightyear Network Solutions, a company that has been around for 15+ years. Lightyear is the only large scale telecom company offering a network marketing model for a home based business.

Low Overhead and Home Based Business

I was meeting at lunchtime with some businesspeople who own a retail store.  And the talk centered around lamenting the economic conditions. They had a sense of panic as they will have to make severe cuts in personnel and other areas. As I listened to their dilemmas with less-than-predicated sales levels, I thought afterwards how different it with a home based business. Oh sure, I am not getting as much business as I would like and a good part of that might be due to the economic fears everywhere they were talking about.

But as a home based business, I don’t have the overhead!  I don’t have employees to pay, I don’t have office and warehouse space to rent, I don’t have telephone equipment leases, etc. I work for myself with the help of a contract Bookkeeper and Accountant, and all my office equipment (such that it is) is paid for. Except my cell phone which of course is on a monthly plan. The point here is that a home based business is far more able to weather poor economic conditions than a brick & mortar business because of its low overhead. Overhead is what forces businesses to dip into credit lines when times are slow. I sympathized with them, but was secretly thankful I am where I’m at.

Economic Conditions and Network Marketing

One reason some people give for not wanting to start a home-based business is that the economy is so bad right now. What if I said, this is the VERY time to start one? Would you think I’m just trying to sell you on something? Well here’s the rub. For a network marketing company, these are good times! Why is that?

The reason is simple. During times like these, people are looking for solutions to their money problems. They may be looking for a way to earn a few extra hundred dollars a month or they might be looking for a way to replace income from a lost job. Lost jobs are a common problem now days. Smart people will not sit around and wait for Barack Obama to fix the economy. Smart people will plan and act now. And if you join a network marketing company like MyWirelessRep, you will make money by bringing other people into the company (as well as by selling cell phone plans). Today’s harsh economic conditions can be your ally!

Warding off Bad News

Now that the elections are over and that particular dust has settled, people are looking to new government officials (particularly Barack Obama) to ‘fix the problems’. I think too many people are looking for solutions from government. Most people don’t really know what to do when things are broken that they feel are outside their control.  But some people do the wrong thing. According to the Themes on the Economy newsletter, the one industry that has enjoyed strong growth is the liquor industry.  According to that source: “…spending at bars surged at double digit pace from a year ago.” That would be the way the way some people handle bad news, but not the way I handle it.

There will always be a group of people who look to themselves for solutions when times are difficult and even when times are good. I rarely drink and when I do it’s to raise a toast to success, never to drown sorrows. For me, working on my home based business is my antidote to depressing news. What about you? Where would you rather ward off bad news? In a bar or your home office?

Jobs and the Economy

There are more ‘gloom and doom’ reports in the news today regarding the job market.  The news is reporting that unemployment passed the 6% mark and that 1.2 million jobs have been shed in the U.S. during 2008 so far.  You know what I think of this news?  I don’t pay attention to it, that’s what I think because I don’t have a job. I have a home-based business; there is no job for me to lose or worry about. And I can’t afford to get caught up in the ‘gloom and doom’ news.  My time is better spent running and growing my home based business.

Of course I don’t completely brush off the news; I realize there is a connection between the overall economy and my ability to grow my business. However, I am focusing my mindset in a different direction that most people. Why not join me?

Full Time or Part Time Business?

CNN recently did an article on the Direct Selling industry (an industry which would include MyWirelessRep). According to Amy Robinson of the Direct Selling Association (DSA):

“Direct selling isn’t a full-time job,….It gives you extra money to go on vacation, get the refrigerator fixed or buy Christmas gifts. It’s about getting some extra money in the pocket.” (Full story Here)

The DSA is supposed to be an industry trade group which means they are supposed to be in touch with what’s going on in the world of direct selling. I am not sure what to make of that statement. It’s clearly not how I see direct selling. First of all, I don’t see MyWirelessRep as a ‘job’ at all – it’s home based business as are most direct selling opportunities. To say it’s a job is not even taking the right mindset. Secondly I look at it as a full time business, not part time. Although, the nice thing about home business oppportunities like MyWirelessRep is that they can be worked on a part time basis.

But if you want to truly be free and independant of the ‘job’ mindset, you will want to think of your direct selling as a business not a vocation. I personally don’t see my business as some way to pay for home repairs, rather I see it on a much larger scale. Maybe the DSA statement reflects the reality of most network marketers today and might account for the high failure rate in network marketing and direct selling.

Home Based Business Growing in Spite of Economy

Actually they are growing because of it, not really in sprite of it. I ran across this article which talks about that very subject. They don’t mention MyWirelessRep; instead they focus on the usual direct sales companies like Avon and Pampered Chef. However, the subject matter applies more to MyWirelessRep due to the sour economy. People are waking up to the need to make some money on the side. Whether that means a part time income or a full time home based business, people are really in need right now.

This is a great time to get into a business like MyWirelessRep. Don’t forget that you can join MyWirelessRep for only $49.95 until the end of the year. Where else can you get into a business for under $50? The companies mentioned in that article will require a lot more, usually several hundred dollars. Plus they all require some inventory. MyWirelessRep does not require you to buy any inventory. All cell phones and plans are shipped by Lightyear Wireless, not by you.
