Layoffs at Motorola
Looks like more hard times at Motorola. “Moto” is laying off about 3,000 employees most of them in the handset division. This was reported recently in the Engadget Mobile blog. Motorola is based in Schaumburg, Illinois (on the outer reaches of the greater Chicago area).
This is really not surprising since Motorola has not been particularly innovative in the wireless industry. They RAZR phone has been a huge success, but it’s been around for many years and hasn’t really been able to compete with the higher end phones like the Blackberrys and the Iphones. While this is bad news, it doesn’t mean the wireless industry is retracting like other industries are. Motorola tended to be an “employee heavy” company and simply needed to right-size their business.
