RIM Lowers Its Outlook
RIM (Research in Motion) is brains behind the Blackberry product line and have been having a very good year. Recently they lowered their growth projection from 2.9 new subscriber accounts (quarterly) to 2.6 million. Some people see this as bad news and more gloom and doom, but I think it really just means that RIM is “right sizing” their projections. Blackberry units are on the higher end of the cell phone choice spectrum and consumers seem to be making their cuts starting at the higher end. Consumers are asking themselves questions like “Do I really need a Blackberry; can’t I just get by with a Razr?”. It doesn’t mean the cell phone market is retracting, it just means that Blackberry sales might be slowing down. That aside, 2.6 new subscribers still represents growth over last year it just isn’t as much growth as projected. It’s important to put these kinds of news reports in perspective.
