Be Clear on what you Want

Are you living with whatever you have? And are you happy with that? There is a certain mentality that says we should learn to get by with less. Now I agree that when there is excess involved, it’s a wise thing to cut down to something more of a more normal level. But are you happy when you have get by with less or do you feel deprived?

Conversely, pretty much everyone says they want more money, but do they really need it? Are they happy when they get it? The answers to these questions can only be answered by you - the individual. I can’t answer them for you, but I can say that it involves getting very clear on what you want. And that also involves getting clear on your financial goals. And don’t be afraid to change your financial goals either.

For a long time, my financials goal with my home based business were just about survival. Getting enough money to put food in the cupboard and keep a roof over my head. But now that I’m making a comfortable income, my financial focus has shifted to padding my retirement funds as much as possible (avoiding stock based investments at this time, but even that may change soon).

What about you? Are you clear about wanting a home based business and your financial goals?

Why Qwest Chose Verizon

Last May, Qwest dumped Sprint-Nextel, as their wireless provider and gave the contract to Verizon. This was a 5 year agreement that started last summer. Qwest at one time, had their own wireless network but sold it off many years ago during the last economic downturn in the early 2000’s. Why they sold their own wireless network is baffling to me; it appears in retrospect to be short-sighted on the part of Qwest. Nowadays, Qwest is struggling along with most other companies because in spinning off their wireless network, they spun off the one thing that would have been profitable in years to come. Now Qwest is stuck with wired phone services which is my opinion is a decaying marketing at least in the residential sector. In my opinion, Qwest customers should go directly to Verizon or even better - Lightyear Wireless to get their wireless services. (Remember; Lightyear uses the Verizon Backbone).

But I digress a bit.  That was a blow to Sprint-Nextel and a ‘fist pump’ for Verizon which has grown even bigger since then.  Why did Qwest chose Verizon?  Because Verizon has shown itself to be the most solid, reliable, provider of wireless infrastructure. Qwest must have seen the trend toward Verizon’s growth and its acceleration to being the largest Wireless provider in the US.

Footnote: On January 15, Qwest announced it was closing its Seattle call center and gave the employees the option of moving to Phoenix, Salt Lake City, or Boise.  Times are not good for residential wired phone services.  But times are still booming for wireless services.

Fear of the Economy

Fear of the economy? Not in Network Marketing. A lot of people are caught up in fear of the economic conditions now. People who have the “job” mentality really do have something to fear - lack of jobs. That’s a situation that has been apparent for some time now. The last time jobs were plentiful was during the 1990’s but that went bust around 2001. The so called economic recovery after the last recession did not produce a lot of high paying jobs. On paper it looked like a turnaround because a lot of jobs were added, but the reality of that was there were fewer high paying jobs added during the last turnaround - mostly low paying “McJobs”.

This didn’t go unnoticed by me. Around 2004 was when I decided to pursue my home based business for a full time basis. So now, I don’t worry so much about recessions and recovery. Between my MyWirelessRep and my other endeavors, I have a full time income. And it gets better during bad times like these because there are more people out there looking for those answers to their financial situation that can be found in running one’s own home based business.

So You want to be your Own Boss

A lot of people think about being their own boss.  Often when asked why they want to start their own home based business, a frequent answer I get is “Be my own Boss”.  I wonder however, how many people really give that much thought. What does it mean to “Be your own boss”?

For one thing, that means there is no one to tell you what to do.  In a network marketing business, you may have people such as your upline “advising” you, but they will not be your boss. While that thought might may bring a smile across most people’s face, there is a reality there that you have to deal with.  Since you are your own boss, you must control your own time and how it’s spent.  And that will often mean working more hours per day than you might perhaps have envisioned.  It may require you to force yourself outside of your comfort zone do things you haven’t done before to build that business.

So if you’re ready to really be your own boss and not just fantasize about it, this is a great time to get involved with a network marketing company like Lightyear Wireless.

Marketing Plan Important in NM

One of the problems often faced by new network marketers is the lack of a marketing plan. You know, it’s called network ‘marketing’ for a reason - it involves marketing. To some people that stops them from starting a home based business because it scares them. They’re afraid they’ll have to spend the next 10 years learning marketing techniques or spend thousands of dollars on marketing. That isn’t really the case. I mean there are ways to market your business without much expense or learning curve at all.

For example, at the bottom of most of my posts (including this one) you’ll see a sign-up form for my newsletter. My newsletter is a free email series that contains unique content you won’t find here (or anywhere else) so it’s a good value for anyone who subscribes to it. And it’s a good way for me to market my business. A win win for all. Of course I have to create content for the newsletter, but that is something I do one time and it can be sent to any number of people. Simple, inexpensive, but effective marketing that provides value for everyone.

That’s just part of a marketing plan but it demonstrates the point that you need a marketing strategy. Too often in network marketing people will sign other people up and then just leave them out to pasture when it comes to guiding them further. If you are considering a network marketing opportunity such as MyWirelessRep, you need to make sure to sign up with someone who will be able to help you develop your own marketing plan rather than “Wine Dine Sign, and byeee”.

Product positioning in MLM

Product positioning is very important in network marketing.  It’s important to have a product that people want and need. It’s important there is a marketplace for that product or service.  A seemingly disproportionate number of network marketing companies are centered around nutritional products. I’ve actually lost track of them all, but there is a reason why there are so many. The nutritional supplement market is a huge one.  And that’s important that the product you sell is (or is part of) a large market.  Without a large market demanding the product, who is going to create the demand? The network marketing company? You?  Probably neither and probably it would fold.  Most network marketing companies start on the basis of being part of a large market and then carve out their niche in that market.  Like cell phones and cell phone plans!  What could be a larger market and what product could me in more demand - even in sour economic times?

Ericsson Cuts 5,000 Jobs

Wireless equipment maker Ericsson is cutting some jobs. But the reason for their job cuts are much different than many corporate ‘job cut frenzies’ going on right now. Many job cuts you hear about are due to sales or revenues being down. But in the case of Ericsson, their sales are up but their profits are down from the previous year. Specifically sales jumped a healthy 23% but the profits for the same period fell by 17%. Generally speaking, profits should be somewhat aligned with sales. When sales rise, so should profits and when sales falls, you can expect a drop in profits. The Ericsson scenario indicates they really did have some cost cutting to do and perhaps were overstaffed in some areas. It’s hard to tell since we don’t know all the details, but with growing sales in an economy like this, Ericsson is making the right move here and it looks to be a very healthy move.

Ericsson Cutting 5,000 Jobs Despite Sales Increase

Escape from Someday Isle

The Isle of Someday - know where that is? Someday I’ll [start a home business], someday I’ll [quit my job], someday I’ll [ file in the blank with your favorite Someday I'll ]. There’s actually a book entitled “Escape from Someday Isle” but it deals with subject matter other than starting a home based business. Hopefully however you get the picture. As long as “someday” is something abstract, that someday never arrives and you never arrive on it. And you never really take any action on it. Starting a home based business requires setting a goal accompanied by a firm commitment. Whenever I find myself floating on Someday Isle about something, I make myself either set a firm commitment or dismiss it completely.

So someday never comes but today is here right now. Now is the time to make that firm commitment. One thing I hear a lot is “I think I better wait until times get better” or some variation of that referring to the current recession. Times may improve but there will be endless cycles of recession and boom. Wouldn’t you like a home based business that insulates you against recession by providing residual income? If you can’t commit right now then you aren’t very serious about a home based business, but you can commit, then I suggest you a get started now, not someday.

Top Ten Network Marketing Companies don’t Include Lightyear

I was speaking with someone the other day and he pointed me to a site call MLMRankings.Com. I was vaguely aware of this site before but never paid much attention to it. He asked why Lightyear (the parent company for MyWirelessRep) was ranked so low. In looking at the site, I realized the site ranks network marketing companies by popularity factors and pointed this out to him. It is not clear percisely what formula they use to create these rankings but just because a network marketing company is ‘popular’ does not necessarily make it a good home based business opportunity.

Let’s face it; everyone loves “Top Ten” lists. We have a top 10 for a lot of things; for example the Top 10 box office films of the week and the top 10 tennis players. In the case of the box office Top 10, it’s the movies that have the most attendance, therefore the most popular among movie viewers. I have often gone to see #1 ranked films only to hate them and regret paying attention to the ‘popularity factor’ of it. Furthermore, they change very quickly. This week’s top movie will not even be around in 8 weeks or so but that doesn’t necessarily make it a bad movie 8 weeks from now. In the case of the top 10 tennis players, that ranking system is based on the player’s performance so it’s a measure of that player’s skill. So while top 10 lists are all meaningful in some way, it’s important to put them in perspective.

In the case of the Top 10 network marketing companies (you can view the list here), do the most popular ones mean they’re the best opportunities to join? A quick glance through the list reveals some pretty heavy hitters - Avon, Tupperware, HerbalLife, and MonaVie to name a few. Most of them are household names and are very well known. I would be reluctant to join any of them for one simple reason: too much competition. The more popular a network marketing company is, the more distributors / IBO’s / Reps there will be and those would be your competition. A cardinal rule in marketing in general, which certainly also applies to network marketing, is that the more competition there is for something, the more difficult it will be to market and build a business around it.

So Top 10 rankings are ok, but in the case of network marketing company popularity factors, I would rather go with one that is not a household name. I prefer a network marketing company where there is still plenty of room to grow. With a lesser known company, there’s more of a “wow” factor than say Amway that’s been around for decades (and comes with a lot of baggage). So if the Top 10 doesn’t include MyWirelessRep, that’s perfectly ok with me!

Circuit City and other Retail Changes

Today the New York Times reported that Circuit City will be closing down. Circuit City has 30,000 employees so that’s 30K more people being added to the unemployment line. Once again, I reiterate the problems with a JOB. Apart from just layoffs to cut expenses, whole companies can collapse. And Circuit City is not the only one; there are lot of other large retailers having problems with liquidity. The Retail Industry used to be a somewhat recession proof business and people could always look to it for jobs (even if they weren’t very good paying jobs).

According to CNN Money, there is a paradigm shift in retail that’s coming along with this recession. What does this mean for home based businesses like MyWirelessRep? The conditions are favorable for home based businesses including MyWirelessRep. I can easily see this paradigm shift favoring people shopping for wireless products and services online and through direct sales over going to retail stores like the Verizon Stores or AT&T Stores. This is because the business model of Lightyear Wireless is streamlined, compact, and the independent reps have light overhead in our businesses unlike brick and mortar retail stores. I don’t revel in store closures, but I just say to those 30,000 ex-employees of Circuit City: have you thought about a home based business selling wireless good and services?
