Top Ten Network Marketing Companies don’t Include Lightyear

I was speaking with someone the other day and he pointed me to a site call MLMRankings.Com. I was vaguely aware of this site before but never paid much attention to it. He asked why Lightyear (the parent company for MyWirelessRep) was ranked so low. In looking at the site, I realized the site ranks network marketing companies by popularity factors and pointed this out to him. It is not clear percisely what formula they use to create these rankings but just because a network marketing company is ‘popular’ does not necessarily make it a good home based business opportunity.

Let’s face it; everyone loves “Top Ten” lists. We have a top 10 for a lot of things; for example the Top 10 box office films of the week and the top 10 tennis players. In the case of the box office Top 10, it’s the movies that have the most attendance, therefore the most popular among movie viewers. I have often gone to see #1 ranked films only to hate them and regret paying attention to the ‘popularity factor’ of it. Furthermore, they change very quickly. This week’s top movie will not even be around in 8 weeks or so but that doesn’t necessarily make it a bad movie 8 weeks from now. In the case of the top 10 tennis players, that ranking system is based on the player’s performance so it’s a measure of that player’s skill. So while top 10 lists are all meaningful in some way, it’s important to put them in perspective.

In the case of the Top 10 network marketing companies (you can view the list here), do the most popular ones mean they’re the best opportunities to join? A quick glance through the list reveals some pretty heavy hitters – Avon, Tupperware, HerbalLife, and MonaVie to name a few. Most of them are household names and are very well known. I would be reluctant to join any of them for one simple reason: too much competition. The more popular a network marketing company is, the more distributors / IBO’s / Reps there will be and those would be your competition. A cardinal rule in marketing in general, which certainly also applies to network marketing, is that the more competition there is for something, the more difficult it will be to market and build a business around it.

So Top 10 rankings are ok, but in the case of network marketing company popularity factors, I would rather go with one that is not a household name. I prefer a network marketing company where there is still plenty of room to grow. With a lesser known company, there’s more of a “wow” factor than say Amway that’s been around for decades (and comes with a lot of baggage). So if the Top 10 doesn’t include MyWirelessRep, that’s perfectly ok with me!

Good point. Lightyear is an mlm company that is dealing with the only accessory that people take with them and use many times a day. People will lose their homes before they cancel phone service.

  2. WEll, into the fray I go. I’ve been looking into this. I’m no push over. I’ve done mlm and I run my own businesses. Here’s the rub! An article starts conversation and asks some hard questions which need to be asked. The bottom line in sales is. . . how many sales do I have to do to make money. With traditional I’m making money with each customer I sell. With the mlm I get a small portion but, I retain the customer and all the future purchases he/she makes. They have the convenience of online store that tracks it for me. The customer and I are backed just like the store front rep. If I decide to take two months off or have some medical emergency, in mlm I’m still getting paid. NOT so as a store rep.
Dividends are from a lot of people I get a small amount which with numbers makes me wealthy on everyone’s efforts. As a store rep I have to keep selling no matter what or there just ain’t no check. I must sell all the accessories and periphrials and if I’m off the other reps eat it up like pirhanas! Walk near a store kiosk and make eye contact with one rep. Look up at the others and they are all ready to pounce. I’ve had them try and shove their way through each other to talk to me.
As someone earlier said, it’s still work with the reward put off a little further down the road but, I like the old saying that, I’ll do what you don’t and then I will do what you can’t! Timing, support, finance, and still its your work ethic and attitude that makes it or breaks it. With the right attitude either scenario will make money. Which one makes you happier and leaves your mental health intact? If you’ve done both sides, it’s a no brainer!

  5. That’s true. If a company is using a formula to rate a company they should also explain how it is been calculated.
