Pondering Kindle

Kindle

I’ve been pondering a Kindle for quite some time. But every time I look at the price tag, I say: Uh..no. $360 for an eBook reader? The Kindle is too big to fit in all but the largest pocket and has a screen only slightly smaller than a laptop. Aside from the $360 price tag, books are about $10 each and you can only use books from Amazon? I read it does not support PDF files? So why not just get a laptop? To me the Kindle looks big and bulky of course I am used to reading things on my cell phone.

There has been talk for some time about cell phones as a reader and how that technology might someday morph into an eBook reader. The problem with that is pagination. The kindle is the size it is because it needs to display pages of documents without special formatting. The sites and things you read on your cell phone have been specially formatted for wireless devices. So the Kindle has its place. I just know it’s not in my collection of toys.

It’s a Super Spam!

Posted February 27th, 2009 by Ross and filed in General

Lately I have been getting a lot of what I call Super Spam in my Akismet collection. What a garbage collection! Or as my friends in the UK would say: What a load of rubbish! Does anyone really expect to get these kinds of comments published? I am pasting an excerpt here although the entire spam was 963 words (and of course I have removed the spammy links from it). This is what I call automation run amok. Thank goodness I have Akismet so these don’t show up in my comments!

Solution to your Economic Anxiety

I didn’t coin that term: Economic Anxiety. It’s the mainstream media again beating the recession drums. This article talks about an anxiety index based on income and employment thoughts, fears, etc.

I have a solution for economic anxiety! It’s called a home based business like MyWirelessRep. Starting up a home business is no walk in the park, but it will certainly help someone reduce that anxiety. When the mind is busy and productive, there isn’t time for things like worrying about the economy. Instead of spending energy worrying, try spending that same energy productively; building and growing your home based business.

It says that two thirds of American are worried about the economy. Duh. That’s because they read the mainstream news and don’t know how to filter it out objectively. They haven’t learned the value of seeing glass half full even when everyone is talking about glass half empty. Anyway studies show that when someone is busy doing something meaningful, they are less likely to focus on positive energy. This translates into good times for starting a home business provided you line with someone who will have a viable marketing plan in place.

Apple Strong-Arming its Multi-touch?

Posted February 25th, 2009 by Ross and filed in Wireless News, wireless industry

There are rumors floating around that Apple is trying to defend its multi-touch technology as strict proprietary technology. And that they will defend ‘legally’ against anyone who tries to copy the iPhone multi-touch. Multi-touch refers to the ability of a device to recognize a variety of screen contacts (such as gestures and use of multiple fingers). And there are juicy rumors that Apple strong-armed Google into leaving out true multi-touch features on their HTC G1 Android phone. Google complying of course to keep the relationship in tact.

Things might not be so rosy for Palm with its new Pre phone – a phone with full multi-touch technology. It may not be so easy for Apple to defend multi-touch technology as its own since the technology itself dates back to 1982 at the University of Toronto. It may have too many gray areas and may not be defendable as intellectual property. It will be interesting to see if Apple can control this market or will free enterprise once again guide the wireless industry to newer heights?

How do you use your Smart Phone?

Here is a poll that asks the question: how much of your browsing is done on your phone?

It’s a fair question and I took the poll and answered the “Once at Day” choice. The importance of this question focuses on how people actual use their smart phone. So far the winning category is “Multiple times a day” Go and vote – there is a choice that is likely to work for you. One option for the question they might have included is “No internet access” because there are lots of people who do not want to pay for internet access on their phone.

My once a day is sometimes twice a day. It usually occurs when I am standing in line somewhere like at the bank or the grocery store and want something to read. I open up my smart phone and read the news! It’s not too bad. I really don’t see myself ever replacing the computer with the phone – for example I can’t imagine trying to post this blog from a phone. Clearly smart phones and cell phone are pervasive whichever you look at it.

What is 4G and When can We Expect it?

You hear a lot of talk about 3G and now 4G in wireless news stories and among WiFi people. What is that? Well the ‘G’ just refers to ‘generation’. So 4G is the 4th generation of mobile technology. Unlike 3G (the 3rd generation), there is not yet a formal standard for 4G. So as result, some companies are using the term ‘4G’ in their marketing to refer to self-serving definitions. In general, 4G refers to a mobile technology that will more seamlessly handle higher bandwidth usage like streaming video while also providing a more reliable and robust voice service.

One thing about the 4G standard is certain. Mobile providers will have to upgrade their infrastructure before it can officially begin rolling out. Verizon who is the backbone provider for Lightyear Wireless, will be leading the pack as usual. Verizon has announced plans to begin testing their 4G network service this year (dubbed LTE for Long Term Evolution). Then they plan to launch it live in 25 to 30 U.S. markets in 2010. So we can expect even better handsets to come out of this and provide us dazzling and amazing wireless services in the not too distant future!

Price Hike Benefits Distributors

The other day I wrote a blog about the price of joining MyWirelessRep going up from $49.99 to $99. This is still a tremendous value to the person joining because I can still ask: where else can you start a business for under $100? I mean when we are talking about starting a home based business, the difference between $50 and $99 isn’t going to bother anyone who is serious about doing it.

The price of $49.99 was a promotion and was not really sustainable for a long period because the Customer Acquisition Bonus (CAB) for the enrolling distributor was so small. It was really just a drop in the bucket. But with the entry price of $99, the minimum cab will be $25 and will go all the way up to $95 depending on the position of the enrolling distributor.

MyWirelessRep is still a relatively new division of Lightyear Wireless and as such they are going to be trying various promotions in order to find the right fit for the business model. It’s a dynamic company and is always moving forward. I am happy to be part of it.

Take Action by Starting

One of the keys to success in a home based business, whatever flavor you choose, it to be proactive about your dreams. That is, take some action. If you have been considering a home based business and like the potential of self generating income, then you have to take some action toward that goal. The problem that a lot of people face is they don’t know where to start. My advice: start somewhere! Not just any old company, but choose your company wisely and stay with it. Choose your company wisely by looking at your requirements.

That’s essentially what I have done with MyWirelessRep. I zeroed in on one major thing about this company that was a requirement for me – a product that sells. A home based business opportunity should be built around a product that sells with or without its associated opportunity. And that is the case with MyWirelessRep – who doesn’t use a cell phone? And who isn’t shopping for a way to save money on a necessary item like a cell phone plan these days? The opportunity is the icing on the cake for this business.

When you take some action toward your goal, you can’t help but be one step closer to it. And if you haven’t started anything, your first action should be geared toward starting.

Time is running out!

As you know from reading this blog and getting my newsletters (if you are on my list), you know that joining MyWirelessRep costs only $49.99. I received an announcement today that this promotion will be ending March 3, 2009. The cost to join MyWirelessRep will be $99 as of March 3 – still an amazing value when you consider it lets you join a tremendous business opportunity. You will still get the same thing you get now: a MyWirelessRep website, the first month of your website paid, 25 free leads, and your back office access for training and informational material. If you are on the fence about joining MyWirelessRep, don’t wait any longer however. You have only another couple of weeks to join the opportunity for $49.99.

Excel Communications versus Lightyear Wireless

I got an interesting objection from someone who was considering joining MyWirelessRep. He said that Excel Communications didn’t work and he didn’t think Lightyear would either in the long run. I simply told him that there was no comparison between the two companies and it was like apples and oranges. I more or less left it at that. Now if you look hard enough, you can find an excuse NOT to do just about anything. I wasn’t really interested arguing the matter any further.

That said, however, it was an interesting thing for him to say. If you are not familiar with Excel Communications, you can read about them on their Wiki page here. In the first place, Excel Communications was a very successful network marketing company. It’s failure had nothing to do with network marketing at all. In fact their failure resulted from its parent company filing for bankruptcy. Excel Communications was primarily a long distance provider and in later years, a provider of local wired services. If Excel Communications did anything wrong, they can only be blamed for not responding quickly enough to changing markets.

Back to my ‘apples and oranges’, Lightyear Wireless – MyWirelessRep focuses on the booming market for wireless products and services. They do have a long distance product but it’s a minor player in their product line up because the market for long distance isn’t as favorable as it was in Excel’s day. So while they are both telecom companies, the company mission and focus are different (not to mention their timing in market). So if I get this objection again, I will be able to greatly expand on my apples and oranges.
