Over at the “Pink Truth” there is a great story written by someone who tried and failed at working her network marketing business (Mary Kay Cosmetics). It’s linked below and I recommend you read it because it’s a post mortem lesson on how not to do network marketing. In Mary Kay, the normal marketing channel is the home party. This is actually fairly common in network marketing companies where product presentation is important. The home party marketing strategy dates all the way back to the early Tupperware parties.

Why am I talking about Mary Kay? To point out the vast different in product line between some network marketing and Lightyear Wireless. Why would we do home party for a cell phone? You see, the product presentation isn’t that important because everyone knows what cells phones are and what they can do. Furthermore, the cell phone is something you get once every two years or so. So a Lightyear home party showing off cells phone wouldn’t make that much sense.

The reality of home parties is they have limitations anyway. For one, they are extremely time consuming. In the second place, they have territory limitations. The person who wrote that lamenting story points this out when she says:

I would never be able to make my money back by just selling, because she was recruiting the whole town.

If you live a smaller city or small town, you will eventually run out of people to invite to home parties. And the problem becomes more acute if there are other reps in your neighborhood. These problems can exist even in larger city (territory conflicts). The home party is really just an extension of working the warm market – a market that has inherent limitations. As mobile apps get more and more agile and abundant, people are finding that things they used to do with the desktop computer, they can now do with their smart phone. Well maybe not everything but the mobile phones are making inroads into PC territory and perhaps one day soon, they will may be considered a replacement? I personally use my smart phone for web surfing in places where a computer is not available and I have nothing else to do. Examples of these situations are standing in line at the bank, waiting for someone who’s running late, and sitting in a waiting room where magazines are sparse or uninteresting. And on the occasions I use public transit, I use it there too. That’s a group specifically mentioned in the brief.

No matter how you slice it, mobile phones are a still expanding industry. And you can’t say that about too many industries anymore. That makes MyWirelessRep an amazing business opportunity at a just the right time.

Mobile apps changing PC habits

I got to wondering about how many people are looking for a home based business each month. So I decided to check my favorite online resource: Google. In this case, I logged into my Google account and checked their “Keyword Research Tool” to see how many searches were done last month for ‘home based business’. 673,000 searches were done in Google in February! That’s a lot of people thinking about a home business. And of course that doesn’t even count people that are looking for home based business somewhere other than Google.

All these people looking for home businesses but I wonder how many of them are actually serious about it? It isn’t surprising that under the current conditions, a lot of people are looking to supplement or replace their income. But I wonder how many of these are actually ready for such an endeavor?

While the economy is generally slow and hiring is even slower, Verizon continues to hire customer service personnel at their Hanover, MD call center. There are few businesses now that are taking on new employees. Most businesses are either laying off employees, cutting back, or just hiring replacements for people who leave.

So this is a great indicator of the strength of the wireless industry. I think we can look to Verizon as being the leading business and trendsetter of this industry. Verizon Wireless Continues to Hire Customer Service Representatives

Well not everyone gets it when it comes to cell phones. Today’s chatter talks about two people I know.

Friend 1 – I’ll call him “John”. John is around my age (mid 50’s) lives alone and has a land line phone. I have a hard time getting hold of him. He is an acquaintance rather than a good friend, but I like to keep in contact with him. So I had this discussion with him about getting a cell phone. I said, “you know John you can get a cell phone for the same cost or even less that what you’re paying for that land line. You’re never home and all I ever get is your voice mail.” He responded by declaring he didn’t think he could benefit from a cell phone because he’s hardly ever home! Clearly he misses the point. Recently he had back surgery and I have not been able to get hold of him to see if he’s OK. He doesn’t get it.

Friend 2 – I’ll call her “Jane”. Jane was supposed to meet me for lunch a few weeks ago. We set a time and place. When I got to the restaurant she wasn’t there but called me on my Lightyear Wireless cell phone. She said she had written the address down wrong and was sorry she was late, but had to find a pay phone to call me. When she finally arrived, I said “Um Jane where’s your cell phone?”. She casually responded “Oh I left it home; I knew I was coming straight here”. Clearly she doesn’t get it either. Recently First Lady Michelle Obama was photographed at a homeless shelter where she was volunteering as a food server. The photo showed a homeless man taking her picture with his cell phone. Rush Limbaugh made a big deal out of this – like it was some kind of social services entitlement or something. Politics aside, I think Mr. Limbaugh misses the point here or perhaps he has not yet realized just how pervasive wireless services are. Or perhaps he is still stuck back in the day when cell phones were considered somewhat of a luxury gadget.

The truth is, they are pervasive and everyone uses them – even homeless people. You might wonder how can someone without a home afford a cell phone. Did you know that you can get pre-loaded cell phones at places like 7-11 for about $20? They don’t have many minutes and when they’re gone they have to be loaded again. I’ve heard that it costs a lot to re-load them so they probably get tossed away – disposable cell phones!

At any rate, cell phones are everywhere and just about everyone uses them. The homeless people who use them need them as a lifeline to the outside world. Those cell phones allow them to receive calls from prospective employers and such, so for that group, I’d say it’s a necessity too.

Still even those can be built up to success with the right amount of work and the right business building mindset. Expect to build a business with a network marketing company, not have one fall into your lap. Once you get that mindset, you will go far.
