Wireless Voice and Data Demands its Portion of the Spectrum

As though anyone was unsure of the increasing role of wireless voice and data today, just consider this. The recent FCC Broadband Plan plans to free up about 300Mhz from the spectrum to use exclusively as wireless broadband. Almost half of this bandwidth will come from reserves for broadcast television. This tells us something most of us already knew.

First, the role of broadcast television is decreasing. This part of the entertainment industry has been in decline for at least two decades as digital service from cable and satellite providers have taken over. The recent digital conversion freed up a lot of unused bandwidth in the spectrum.

Second, this shows the that the role of hand held wireless devices is rapidly gaining in as common appliances. We have come to depend on them for things far beyond just making and taking phone calls. I use mine in the morning to browse the news where I used to fire up the computer to do that. Now I can scan the news while eating breakfast in the morning.

This bandwidth grab will be good for the wireless market and will help it grow into its rightful place.
