Does it Take Luck to Be Successful?

I was speaking with someone the other day about joining my Lightyear Wireless business. As the conversation often does, it turned to questions about my success as in “how much do you make from this?”. I always refuse to answer that question directly for two reasons. 1) income claims are frowned upon and 2) my income varies from month to month. The way I answer that question is to say “I make a full time living from my home business” – which is a true statement.

He was one of those people who believes the 97/3 theory. That theory says that 97% of people to attempt a network marketing business fail at it, while only 3% actually succeed. I don’t really believe that statistic, but this person said “Oh you must be one of the lucky few who make money from this business”.

I assured him that luck had little or perhaps nothing to do with my success and bid him farewell. This turned out to be someone who didn’t really sound like he was ready for a home based business so I moved on. But I got to thinking about the luck thing later.

Imagine that? Some people think that you have to be “lucky” to be successful in network marketing! Oh, I guess there is potential luck involved. It would be ‘lucky’ if I happened to get a lead and signed up a person who turned out to be one of those ’super earners’. You know, one of those people who ends up building a team of 50,000 with me as the upline. That hasn’t happened yet but yet I still make a good income from network marketing. Perhaps it will happen and yes that would be lucky for me.

But an individual’s success in network marketing does not depend on ‘luck’ in the same sense as it does in pure ‘luck driven’ things like the lottery. In the lottery, your odds are in the 100 millions of winning and it depends almost entirely on luck – not just luck but ‘extreme luck’.

Network marketing on the other hand depends on persistence, attitude, perseverance, and many other attribute factors. And yes, a stroke of luck will certainly help but you don’t have to depend on it.

Start a Home Based Business Today

Not that many people wake up in the morning and say “I think I’ll start a home based business today”. Most people who think about how to improve their financial situation, think in terms of getting a job. However, with unemployment reaching 10% in many places, those people are being forced to reconsider the possibility of getting a job.

10% unemployment is a lot worse than the percentage indicates. The reason for this is that with each percentage point of unemployment the more people there will be competing for fewer and fewer jobs. It’s actually an escalating effect. I don’t mean to dwell on that, but I think this is why so many people are turning to a home based business. Lots of peple only consider it and never take it any further.

One of things that stop them from ever starting is they wonder “what will I sell?” and “how will I sell it?”. Both questions answered with Lightyear Wireless

Create your own Stimulus Package

There’s a lot of talk about stimulus packages lately. There’s even more talk about whether the Obama stimulus is working or not. At the very least, you must give the Obama stimulus some time and that points out something about it: It’s a long term investment not a short term fix. So why not create your own stimulus package?

If you’re finances aren’t quite where you want them to be, why not earn extra income with a home based business? Ad why not work a simple home business like Lightyear Wireless. It doesn’t get much easier than cell phones. Everyone has them, everyone more or less understands them. Everyone may not understand exactly how they work, but they know they do work and provide a valuable service to them. So forming a business based on the cell phone market is hardly a market that is narrow in any way.

Like the stimulus critics, the wireless industry has its critics too. Some of them say the wireless industry has peaked or is close to running its course. But there are signs on the horizon this is not so. Cases in point: the new frequency spectrums and the possible regulation of large monopoly-like relationships such as the ATT / Apple one. There is still a lot of room for growth in this industry so why not be part of helping make it grow?

Why Infomercials Do Work

As I blogged about a few days ago, Lightyear Wireless will airing an infomercial as well as some 60 second commercials. This will begin Monday 5/4/09.

Many people think that infomercials are just noise. But why do you think there’s so many of them? Because they work that’s why! Why do infomercials work? Well for lots of reasons, but mainly it’s their style of advertising. The 30 minute spot give the appearance of a TV program versus a quick commercial. The 30 minute spot of an infomercial allows for more information to be passed to the viewer. During this time there is enough time to fully explain the benefits of the Lightyear Wireless program. And there is enough time to address any objections the viewer might have.

The experience for the viewer is better since it gives them more to work with than a 60 second spot can ever do. They’re going to be better informed and won’t have as many questions. I am really looking forward to the spot running and hope that Lightyear Wireless will do this again.

What’s to be learned from Home Parties?

Over at the “Pink Truth” there is a great story written by someone who tried and failed at working her network marketing business (Mary Kay Cosmetics). It’s linked below and I recommend you read it because it’s a post mortem lesson on how not to do network marketing. In Mary Kay, the normal marketing channel is the home party. This is actually fairly common in network marketing companies where product presentation is important. The home party marketing strategy dates all the way back to the early Tupperware parties.

Why am I talking about Mary Kay? To point out the vast different in product line between some network marketing and Lightyear Wireless. Why would we do home party for a cell phone? You see, the product presentation isn’t that important because everyone knows what cells phones are and what they can do. Furthermore, the cell phone is something you get once every two years or so. So a Lightyear home party showing off cells phone wouldn’t make that much sense.

The reality of home parties is they have limitations anyway. For one, they are extremely time consuming. In the second place, they have territory limitations. The person who wrote that lamenting story points this out when she says:

I would never be able to make my money back by just selling, because she was recruiting the whole town.

If you live a smaller city or small town, you will eventually run out of people to invite to home parties. And the problem becomes more acute if there are other reps in your neighborhood. These problems can exist even in larger city (territory conflicts). The home party is really just an extension of working the warm market – a market that has inherent limitations. Is there are better way? Yeah. Work the larger market served by companies like MyWirelessRep.

What’s Holding you Back?

What is stopping you from starting that home based business? Usually when I ask that question, I get one of several answers, usually having to do with doubt, fear, or time (not enough of). Or some combination or variation of those three. Of those three, only doubt is perhaps well founded.  There are a lot of scams out on the net masquerading as home based businesses and anyone considering a home business should be wary of them. But that doesn’t mean you should keep a closed mind to every opportunity that comes your way. Keep the doors open, but don’t walk through them blindly.  Ask some tough questions of whoever you tries to sign you up and that includes me.  I am not afraid of tough questions, the worst that can happen is that I won’t know the answer and have to get back to you on it. As for the other two things; fear and lack of time, perhaps a subject for another day. But those are self imposed limits in my opinion.  So what’s stopping you?

Time is Right for Home Based Business

A while back I blogged about the importance of having a Plan B. Plan B as in what happens if my primary source of income drops off? This is becoming increasingly more important as jobs get fewer and fewer. A lot of people I talk to say they don’t think they can operate a home based business because the economy is so bad. That’s a glass half full or half empty thing. The reality is actually the opposite of what you might think if you are looking at the empty half. Now the is best time to get involved in a home based business because a lot of people are looking for answers to their Plan B question right now.

There were always be a large portion of people who will never consider a home based business. But as jobs get scarcer and pay scales become more eroded, many people will start to think about starting a home based business. They know they will need an alternative to the endless cycle of searching for a job, being hired, and the only to be laid off at some future point. This is your market if you join a business like MyWirelessRep. How will you reach that market? Well if you join under me, you will access to a team of experts who understand internet marketing and will be able to use little known techniques among network marketing people.

Lotto Versus Home Business

Recently I spoke with someone about home business opportunities and we had a very interesting discussion about the Lottery. Here it’s the Washington State Lottery. This individual thought the chances of getting success in a home bases business was about the same as playing the lottery. That of course, was a notion I vehemently disagreed with.

Let’s compare the lotto to running a MyWirelessRep home business which costs $49.99 per month to run. Say that we compare that to buying $49.99 worth of lotto tickets every month. Yes, you might win one of the lotto’s larger prizes, but everything is left up to chance. You can try to tell me that the more months go by that you pay $49.99 into the lotto system, the more your chances increase. I might go along with that, but let’s ask the tens of thousands of regular lotto players that never win a large jackpot how they feel about that.

If we took that same $49.99 each  month and instead of buying lotto tickets, put it into a MyWirelessRep home business, would that guarantee a big prize either? Not really, but the big difference is the MyWirelessRep is effort based and the lotto is chance based. The more you work a home based business (whether it be MyWirelessRep or some other business), the more success you will have. It’s that simple. You may have failures along the way, but there is a prize of success waiting for anyone who is willing to put in the time and effort that goes along with the business.

The person I spoke has not yet signed up for the business although I gave him that thought to leave with. For the record, we did estimate he is spending at least $50 per month on tickets. What about you? Are you looking for a chance driven lifestyle or an effort driven lifestyle? Would you spend $50 on the lotto or on building your home based business?

Two Things to Watch Out For

When checking out home based businesses, here are two things to look out for. Beware of any home based business that makes it look like you can make huge amounts of money without doing much work. These are usually scams. Most legitimate network marketing companies like MyWirelessRep will take work to build up. Another thing you should avoid are companies that are just starting up. That’s not say that there aren’t legitimate startup companies, but your risk of having them fail is greater. Stick with a solid company with low or no debt and one that has been around for a while. MyWirelessRep is part of Lightyear Network Solutions, a company that has been around for 15+ years. Lightyear is the only large scale telecom company offering a network marketing model for a home based business.
