As though anyone was unsure of the increasing role of wireless voice and data today, just consider this. The recent FCC Broadband Plan plans to free up about 300Mhz from the spectrum to use exclusively as wireless broadband. Almost half of this bandwidth will come from reserves for broadcast television. This tells us something most of us already knew.
First, the role of broadcast television is decreasing. This part of the entertainment industry has been in decline for at least two decades as digital service from cable and satellite providers have taken over. The recent digital conversion freed up a lot of unused bandwidth in the spectrum.
Second, this shows the that the role of hand held wireless devices is rapidly gaining in as common appliances. We have come to depend on them for things far beyond just making and taking phone calls. I use mine in the morning to browse the news where I used to fire up the computer to do that. Now I can scan the news while eating breakfast in the morning.
This bandwidth grab will be good for the wireless market and will help it grow into its rightful place.

Back in 2005 the auction giant, eBay, purchased the internet telephony service, Skype. It surprised a lot of people at the time, because there was this nagging question of what will eBay do with Skype?
Fast forward 4 years. eBay still has not figured out what to do with Skype and there are again rumors of them floating it for sale. The problem with Skype is that even though it’s a Voice over IP service (VOIP), it’s still largely a wired service. That means you have to use with either a stationary hand set or a fixed range hand set (like a cordless phone).
Trouble is, this isn’t where telecommunications is going. It’s gone (and is still going) wireless. VOIP Services like Skype and Vonage help to cut down old school wired phone costs (also known as POTS lines) but VOIP services still have the inherent limitations of being a wired service. Whoever ends up with Skype will have to figure out how to take it to the next level and somehow tap it into the wireless services. Clearly eBay has not figured out how to do that and probably wishes they had not purchased Skype.
Not too long ago I gave up the wired phone that I had with Qwest. It simply didn’t make much sense to me to go on paying $50 per month for something I wasn’t using that much. It seemed like all my conversations were being held on my Lightyear Wireless phone or my other cell phone for my other business. So away it went!
Admittedly ,it’s sometimes hard to talk business on a cell phone. This is because you might be in a place that has a lot of background noise or just has poor reception. The wired phone would not do any good in those situations, and generally once I get back to the home office, the reception is fine. When that happens and there is trouble hearing or speaking for either party, I just offer to call them back. So who still uses wired phones and why?
My guess is that it’s people who still just don’t get cellular phones and their usage. Like these two. Or maybe there are people who really don’t want to be bothered by the phone when they go out. That’s a valid reason if the person feels that way. But the vast majority see the cell phone as a benefit to them, particularly if communication is important in their lives. Like someone looking for a job for example; They can be much more reachable by using a cell phone on their resume rather than their home phone. They may or may not be home when the prospective employer calls. Hmm. That is, if there are any prospective employers left?

While the economy is generally slow and hiring is even slower, Verizon continues to hire customer service personnel at their Hanover, MD call center. There are few businesses now that are taking on new employees. Most businesses are either laying off employees, cutting back, or just hiring replacements for people who leave.
So this is a great indicator of the strength of the wireless industry. I think we can look to Verizon as being the leading business and trendsetter of this industry. That’s one of the reasons that MyWirelessRep continues to be a truly wonderful home based business opportunity. Other business opportunities like nutritional supplement companies, are experiencing a slow down. People are coming to decide they can do without their nutritional supplement, but not their cell phone.
Verizon Wireless Continues to Hire Customer Service Representatives
Cell phone prices have fallen greatly in the past few years. In some cases, they’re being given away free - with a plan of course. Speaking of plans, there is indication that the prices of plans may be falling too. Several carriers are implementing loyalty plans: lowering monthly costs for existing customers. These carriers include Verizon and of course Verizon is the underlying telecom carrier for Lightyear Wireless. Does that mean Lightyear plans will drop? I don’t know but they are already priced at competitive rates and provide huge value already. Customers may start skimping on higher end phones and higher end plans, so it appears the carriers will do everything to match their plans with the consumer budget.
Will Your Wireless Bill Get Cheaper?
I got an interesting objection from someone who was considering joining MyWirelessRep. He said that Excel Communications didn’t work and he didn’t think Lightyear would either in the long run. I simply told him that there was no comparison between the two companies and it was like apples and oranges. I more or less left it at that. Now if you look hard enough, you can find an excuse NOT to do just about anything. I wasn’t really interested arguing the matter any further.
That said, however, it was an interesting thing for him to say. If you are not familiar with Excel Communications, you can read about them on their Wiki page here. In the first place, Excel Communications was a very successful network marketing company. It’s failure had nothing to do with network marketing at all. In fact their failure resulted from its parent company filing for bankruptcy. Excel Communications was primarily a long distance provider and in later years, a provider of local wired services. If Excel Communications did anything wrong, they can only be blamed for not responding quickly enough to changing markets.
Back to my ‘apples and oranges’, Lightyear Wireless - MyWirelessRep focuses on the booming market for wireless products and services. They do have a long distance product but it’s a minor player in their product line up because the market for long distance isn’t as favorable as it was in Excel’s day. So while they are both telecom companies, the company mission and focus are different (not to mention their timing in market). So if I get this objection again, I will be able to greatly expand on my apples and oranges.

Yesterday I blogged about cell phones being a necessity. There are many reasons for this, but one that I think may rise above all others is the fact that they provide a phone you can have with you at all times. Well except for certain public events like live theater where they ask you to turn it off. Even then you can put the phone on vibrate and take the call in the lobby.
If you’re under the age of about 25, you may not remember what life was like before cell phones. I sure do! And I can’t imagine going back to that era of a fixed wired phone. How well I remember always worrying about having to be home for a call I might have been expecting. There were many times I was expecting a call and had to worry about stepping out and missing it. That important job interview or a long distance call from a loved one for example. The era gave us the terms voice mail tag or phone tag. Clever little names for the back and forth that occurred when people kept missing each other and had to leave voice messages: tag you’re it!
When commercial cell phones first appeared on the scene in the mid 1990’s, they were expensive (not to mention big and unwieldy). Even when they were comparatively expensive, people still adopted the technology. And as the technology got smaller and cheaper, it became a no brainer to adopt them. It’s really easy to how they quickly transitioned from luxury to necessity. Now the question remains, why do people still have wired phones at all when cell phone plans are the same price or cheaper? The wireless revolution continues!
Communication is like a cornerstone of our society. It is at the core of personal and business relationships (and even casual relationships). Face to face contact is still important but with the ever shrinking global world, such meetings are always possible. Other communication methods like email and instant messaging are important, but they lack the personal interactive touch that we need.
So we have come to rely heavily on our phones. The old phones that sit on a desk and are hard wired into a phone jack are rapidly falling out of fashion. So it’s no surprise that the wireless industry is still maintaining positive figures even in down economy. People have accepted wireless phones as a way of life; a necessity of life as much on par with the television. The television by the way, early in its life was thought of as a luxury item but today is a tool of communication (albeit one way communication). So these are just a few of the point that make it attractive to start a mobile phone business. And here is a surprising fact: you don’t need a large amount of capital to start a cell phone business or keep it running!

Last May, Qwest dumped Sprint-Nextel, as their wireless provider and gave the contract to Verizon. This was a 5 year agreement that started last summer. Qwest at one time, had their own wireless network but sold it off many years ago during the last economic downturn in the early 2000’s. Why they sold their own wireless network is baffling to me; it appears in retrospect to be short-sighted on the part of Qwest. Nowadays, Qwest is struggling along with most other companies because in spinning off their wireless network, they spun off the one thing that would have been profitable in years to come. Now Qwest is stuck with wired phone services which is my opinion is a decaying marketing at least in the residential sector. In my opinion, Qwest customers should go directly to Verizon or even better - Lightyear Wireless to get their wireless services. (Remember; Lightyear uses the Verizon Backbone).
But I digress a bit. That was a blow to Sprint-Nextel and a ‘fist pump’ for Verizon which has grown even bigger since then. Why did Qwest chose Verizon? Because Verizon has shown itself to be the most solid, reliable, provider of wireless infrastructure. Qwest must have seen the trend toward Verizon’s growth and its acceleration to being the largest Wireless provider in the US.
Footnote: On January 15, Qwest announced it was closing its Seattle call center and gave the employees the option of moving to Phoenix, Salt Lake City, or Boise. Times are not good for residential wired phone services. But times are still booming for wireless services.
There is no shortage of bad economic news these days, but once again we see that electronics (specifically consumer electronics) are faring better than most industries under the current conditions. Cell phones are a part of this group. Not limited to cell phones, the percentage of consumer spending on durable goods was at 17% last year. That is up from single digits 30 years ago and shows that consumer electronics like cell phones have become necessities, not luxury items. This makes MyWirelessRep a good solid option for a home based business. It’s a business where you don’t have to worry about the product going out of style or becoming obsolete any time soon.
