So far, I’ve talked about MyWirelessRep in terms of wireless cell phone plans and packages. Indeed the name MyWirelessRep implies specialty in wireless services. While wireless service packages are the flagship products of MyWirelessRep did you know that the company (via the parent company Lightyear) provides a lot of other products and services including Voice over IP (VOIP)?

VOIP for those of you who don’t understand it (and I’m not sure I totally understand it either) that just means you use your phone via the Internet versus a phone line or a cellular service. You dial and receive calls using your computer.

There are several advantages to VOIP. The biggest advantage is the cost savings in long distance charges; particularly in making international calls. If you’ve ever tried to make a call to another country with your cell phone OR you’ve traveled abroad and used your cell phone to call home, you likely got a very rude surprise when you got your wireless bill. Using wireless services for making international calls depending on the country, results in hugely inflated phone bills – sometimes as much as 5 dollars per minute!

The cost of calling internationally via a VOIP service is usually limited to the cost of the internet connection making it a very smart choice for international calling. Lightyear’s VOIP uses the Xstream system, a commercial grade VOIP router. Furthermore, Lightyear’s VOIP infrastructure is a QOS (Quality of Service) infrastructure. What that is means that you get a higher level of quality on your calls than you would with a low grade service such as Skype (where dropped and ‘crackling’ calls are common).

MyWirelessRep also has a “Virtual VOIP” card that you can purchase. This is a pre paid VOIP card that lets you use your existing phone to call a VOIP service and it then routes your calls over a VOIP service. This also gives you the advantage of low per minute usage. For example, if you wanted to call France from the U.S with this VOIP card service, it would be 2 cents per minute. This option is great for short term international calling needs.
